Who we are
Human rights for confidence. Social networks for livelihoods.
Women Grow Uganda (WGU) is a non-government organisation formed to empower unprivileged rural women and all vulnerable people in isolated communities starting from the underlying causes of poverty that keep them exposed and hold back social and economic growth.
Vision
A society where every woman regardless of background has the tools, skills and opportunities to lead a fulfilling, prosperous life.
We picture a Uganda where women and vulnerable communities are uplifted, economically self-sufficient, and actively shaping the development of their society.
Mission
To build the capacities of unprivileged rural women, youth, children and other vulnerable groups for social and economic empowerment.
- Confidence first rights, voice and leadership
- Networks second cooperatives, savings and markets
- Livelihoods that last farms, trades and enterprises
How we began
An exchange in 2003. An organisation in 2012.
2003 the exchange. Our founders took part in a programme facilitated by FK/NOREC, sharing knowledge across borders. What they learned about organising, adult learning and village enterprise shaped everything that followed.
2012 founded. Women Grow Uganda was formed to carry that learning home: to Sironko in the east and Pakwach in the north-west, and to the isolated communities around them.
Today. Rice and coffee value chains, village savings, health promoters, literacy classes, environment clubs and advocacy for young single mothers and a global network through ACWW.
What guides us
Plain principles, practised weekly.
Start with her agenda
We do not arrive with answers. Problem-mapping workshops let women name the challenge and the order to tackle it.
Build groups, not queues
Cooperatives and SACCOs outlast projects. We invest in the meeting, the book-keeping and the trust.
Teach what pays
Climate-smart farming, tailoring, literacy and book-keeping skills that show up in household income.
Protect while we empower
Child protection, gender and HR policies are not paperwork. They decide who is safe in our rooms.
